About the Valdal building

Here, the Norwegian Per Perssen Lillebo and his wife Dordi Jonsdatter bought a large area of land from a farmer in Idre in 1831. They had already settled earlier, around 1825, at Gammeldalen, just under a kilometer from the Valdalsbygget on the Norwegian side. In 1865, the family consisted of 9 people and they had 1 horse, 9 cows, 10 sheep and 4 goats. Winter fodder for the animals was harvested on the fertilized dykes at Gammeldalen and Valdalsbygget and on the extensive marshes in the south. The hay from the marshes was raked in winter rakes and driven home in the winter. Eventually they moved from Gammeldalen to Valdalsbygget.

People lived here for 3 generations as permanent residents until 1922. The Valdals building was then used as a shack until 1958. The Valdals building can be very old. According to legend, there have been older buildings where the rest house and dwelling house stand, we do not yet know how old this building was and who lived there. The farm gives a good picture of what a settlement looked like in the 19th century. The site is typical of the old-time way of choosing a building site, – on a small hill by a fine spring. Almost all the houses that were needed on a farm have been preserved here, dwelling houses, winter barns, barns, stables, summer barns and a small house by the stream where the milk was cooled. Remains of a tar valley and an earthen cellar are also present. The old houses are well preserved and have recently been equipped with some new timber and new roofs. There is also a substantial rest house here that is open to visitors. The farm is now owned by the Statens Fastighetsverk and is located within a nature reserve. Please look a little extra carefully at the walls and door of the main cabin. There are many inscriptions from the war years, even today you can make out the names of the border patrols.
